Rs. 4.75 Crore Alimony: Yuzendra Chahal and Dhanashree Vrema’s Divorce Settlement

An important update has come in the divorce case of Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma. The Bombay High Court has allowed the couple to skip the mandatory 6-month cooling period usually required after filing for divorce.

The court has asked the family court to make a decision on the plea of cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his wife Dhanashree Verma by March 20. This is because Chahal, who represents Punjab Kings, will be playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season that begins on 22 March.

As per the report, The Bombay High Court has reversed a Family court’s decision that refused to skip the mandatory waiting period for Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma’s divorce under the Hindu Marriage Act.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma, who got married in December 2020, have been living separately since June 2022. In February this year, they filed for divorce at the Bandra Family Court. Along with their petition, they also submitted a request to waive the mandatory cooling-off period.

According to Section 13B(2), a family court can review a mutual divorce petition only after six months of its filing. This colling period is meant to give couples time to reconsider and possibly reconcile. Since Chahal and Dhanashree have already been living separately for over two years, the Bombay High Court decided that the cooling-off period was not necessary in their case.

The situation became more complicated when the court, on February 20, declined to skip the mandatory 6-month cooling-off period. The decision was made because Chahal and Dhanashree had only partially followed the terms of their agreement.

According to the consent terms, Yuzvendra Chahal had agreed to pay Rs. 4.75 crore as permanent alimony to his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma. But Until now, the cricketer has reportedly paid only Rs. 2.37 crore. The court viewed the failure to pay the remaining amount as non-compliance, leading to the rejection of the cooling-off plea.

The family court made its decision after reviewing a report from the family counselor, which pointed out that the terms of the agreement were not followed. On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court observed that the couple had been living separately for more than two and a half years. This fact supported the court’s decision to enforce the consent terms, requiring the payment of the remaining amount.
