In its suggestion to the Centre, the Agro Food Chamber of Commerce and Industry stated that all related items should be taxed at the same rate to facilitate the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

In a press release, its founding president, S. Rethinavelu, encouraged the Prime Minister to get involved in the GST issue. He proposed that the Group of Ministers appointed by the GST council examine the rate of tax on each and every commodity instead of investigating the possibility of imposing a single rate of tax on all commodities covered under one Section of the Harmonised System of Nomenclature (H.S.N.) Code structure under which GST tax rates have been fixed, thereby avoiding confusion.

He stated that it was sad that the matter of Sree Annapoorna Sree Gowrishankar restaurant owner D. Sreenivasan bringing out GST shortcomings in a meeting hosted by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Coimbatore had been blown out of proportion.

A person who has been in the hotel business for decades has voiced difficulties in paying GST. He just asked for uniform taxation of similar commodities in a trade. Mr. Rethinavelu stated that several sectors of trade and industry face similar challenges.
