Tax Evasion: Jeweller evading Rs. 1.19 crore in taxes; FIR lodged
GST official filed a complaint against a jeweller from Memnagar, who runs a jewellery shop on C G Road in Ahmedabad, alleging tax evasion and non-payment of interest and penalties of Rs. 1.19 crore.
An inspector, Purvi Upadhyay lodged a complaint with the GST Department stating that the accused, named Deepak Choksi, failed to pay Value Added Tax (VAT) between 2005 and 2006. She added in her complaint that the government implemented Value Added Tax (VAT) in 2003 and Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1, 2017.
It is clearly mentioned in the FIR that on September 16, 2005, Choksi registered a firm (Deepak Zaveri and Company) and obtained its sales tax number. But still, he failed to pay the VAT amounted to Rs. 59.30 lakh.
As a result, the calculated amount of interest on the tax is Rs. 25.46 lakh, and the penalty was counted as Rs. 34.89 lakh by November 30, 2010
