Uttar Pradesh: CGST Inspector Arrested Along With Middleman in Bribery Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a central goods and services tax (CGST) inspector along with a middleman for a bribery case. These two are accused of asking to pay Rs. 6,000 for issuing GST number.
CBI registered the case on April 7 under Section 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as revised in 2018). As per the official, Abhishek Swami, a private individual, was acting as a middleman for CGST Baraut, Baghpat, and he was demanding Rs. 6,000 to issue a GST number for the complainant's firm.
Swami was caught by CBI on April 7, and he confessed his involvement in the bribery in Baraut.
During the inspection, the investigators found that Vivek Kumar Singh, a CGST inspector, was also involved directly in the bribe in Baraut. It was found that Vivek Kumar Singh planned the bribe demand through Swami, and he was the actual beneficiary of the bribery. The bribe was allegedly taken to speed up the process of GST registration using his official position.
Even after being summoned, Singh refused to cooperate with the investigation and was found to have important information that he did not want to give to the officials. Due to this, he was arrested by the CBI on April 9, 2025.
The CBI also searched the homes of both accused in Baghpat and Mirzapur, where they found important documents and other materials linked to the case.
