Uttara Kannada District Shut – Schools and Colleges Remain Closed Due to Heavy Rainfall

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) predicts that Karnataka will see active to vigorous rainfall through 16th July. On Monday, citing a “red alert” issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Uttara Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) Laxmipriya declared a holiday for all schools and post-university colleges in the taluks of Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Dandeli, and Joida.

When there is a red alert, it means there will be more than 20 centimetres of rain in a day. The IMD reports that Castle Rock in Uttara Kannada had the most rainfall on Sunday (220 mm). The Uttara Kannada district is under a red alert and heavy rain from 1 pm on 14th July to 8.30 pm on 16th July according to the weather service.

According to KSNDMC, the current off-shore trough along the coast of Maharashtra and north Kerala, as well as the cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, are to blame for the intense monsoon conditions over Karnataka. These features are directing additional moisture into Karnataka.

Up until 16th July 2024, there is a chance of rain in the coastal regions of Karnataka, the Malnad districts, and some interior regions. Forecasters have estimated that the state’s dams on the Krishna and Kaveri basins will likely see significant inflows within the next week.

For six dams and barrages in Karnataka where inflows are equal to or greater than the designated threshold limit, the Central Water Commission has released an inflow projection. With storage levels rising above 85%, Kabini Reservoir is placed under red alert.

Authorities will probably control the water level in all six dams and barrages when it is thought necessary to prevent floods downstream and submergence upstream.
