Will Tax Officers Spy on Your Social Media? PIB Busts Viral Claim The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has recently issued a detailed fact-check report. This action comes after a social media post claiming that Income Tax officers will freely access everyone’s emails, or social media from April 1, 2026. However, PIB clarified that Income Tax officials do not get powers to check personal digital or financial data of all taxpayers. Such access is allowed only in specific cases or 'Search and Survey' operations. For ordinary and honest taxpayers who file returns correctly and follow the law there is no change. PIB also highlighted that an X handle, @IndianTechGuide, shared the misleading post, claiming mass digital surveillance by tax authorities.
Income Tax Dept Flags Undisclosed Foreign Assets, Urges Revised ITR Filing by Dec 31, 2025
PIB said that the Income Tax Department cannot freely check or monitor your private digital platforms during normal tax assessments, data processing, or routine scrutiny. "These measures are specifically designed to target black money and large-scale evasion during search and survey, not the everyday law-abiding citizen." Tax authorities have always had the power to seize documents and evidence during searches and surveys. This power is not new and has been part of the Income Tax Act since 1961.
