YSR Congress Criticizes State Government’s Plan for 1% GST Surcharge to Fund Flood Relief
The YSR Congress Party has strongly opposed the state government’s proposal to introduce 1% surcharge in state GST, which is sought to be levied to reimburse flood relief expenses. According to the party, this particular move would bring an additional burden on the heads of citizens who are already facing increased cost of living.
Speaking at a press conference in Vijayawada, a senior YSRCP leader attacked the government for failing to secure sufficient financial aid from the Centre for flood relief. State administration was alleged to be passing its financial burdens to the people unjustly.
The leader also raised a question regarding transparency during the relief processes. He asked them to present a clear report on how much amount they raised in donations and to whom they were being distributed. The YSRCP believes that it is inappropriate to tax citizens in the event of disaster relief, given the unstable condition of its financial health.
The party warned that the introduction of this surcharge could worsen economic hardships faced by people. They said if the government went ahead with the plan, the YSRCP would hold a massive protest against it.
This criticism throws light onto the increasing anxiety over financial strategies by the state. The YSRCP has demanded more accountability with fairer funding of disaster relief initiatives instead of further burdening the public.
