The Madukkarai police seized Rs.78 lakh from three Kerala-based jewellers during a vehicle search on Thursday night after the trio failed to show paperwork verifying the source of the money. The trio has been turned up to the income tax department’s investigation wing for further inquiry.

According to an official source, Madukkarai police sub-inspector Ilavendan and his crew conducted a vehicle check at Marappalam at 8 p.m. and stopped two automobiles having Kerala registration.

They discovered a plastic cover containing 156 bundles of 500-denomination currency notes. They detained the three passengers travelling in the two automobiles for questioning.

The source identified the trio as Suresh, 48, Sasikanth, 48, and Nikil, 22, all natives of Thrissur district in Kerala.

Suresh, 48, Sasikanth, 48, and Nikil, 22, were recognised as residents of Kerala’s Thrissur area. A preliminary investigation found that they were in the gold industry.

“Despite telling the vehicle check team that they were returning with the proceeds of selling 403g of gold ingots to Manoj of Raja Street in Coimbatore, they failed to produce any valid transaction documents.” As a result, they were escorted to the police station, where a case was filed under Section 102 of the Criminal Procedure Code,” according to the source.
