62 Kgs of heroin worth Rs 434 crore seized by DRI at IGI Airport As part of its ongoing crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) discovered yet another unique method of operation and seized 62 kilogrammes of heroin on May 10, 2022 after intercepting an air freight consignment. This is one of India's largest heroin seizures to date via courier, cargo, and aviation passenger modes. The DRI confiscated 55 kg of Heroin from an imported cargo consignment that was declared to include "Trolley Bags" in an operation code-named "BLACK & WHITE." The offending cargo had arrived via Dubai at the Air Cargo Complex, Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi, having originated in Entebbe, Uganda. Swift follow-up operations in Punjab and Haryana resulted in the recovery of another 7 kilogramme of Heroin and Rs. 50 lakh in cash. The illicit market value of the 62 kg Heroin confiscated is believed to be Rs. 434 crore. The recovered Heroin was cleverly placed inside the hollow metal tubes of 126 trolley bags, despite the fact that the import batch comprised 330 trolley bags. It was quite tough to identify the hiding. The illicit consignment's importer has been detained by DRI officers. Other suspects are being questioned as well. More research is being carried out. The DRI made numerous Heroin seizures across the country in the year 2021. During the year 2021, around 3,300 kilogrammes of Heroin was seized. Furthermore, DRI has made substantial Heroin seizures since January 2022, including 34 kg from a container at ICD Tughlaquabad in New Delhi, 205 kg from a container at Kandla port, and 392 kg of Heroin-laced yarn (sutli) at Pipavav port. Multiple cases have been filed in the last three months, resulting in the recovery of more than 60 kg of Heroin from airline passengers.
