7,288 kg gold seized by Customs and DRI in less than 3 years Customs field formations and the Revenue Intelligence Directorate seized 3626.85 kg in 2019-20, 1944.392 kg in 2020-21, and 1717.396 kg in 2021-22. (till November). This was said in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha by Union Minister of State for Finance Shri Pankaj Chaudhary. However, because it is a covert operation, the amount of gold smuggled into the country cannot be correctly measured, according to the Minister. According to the Minister, there is no credible research or study from which to draw conclusions on the influence of thriving unofficial trade on organised bullion and jewellery trade. The government intervenes through policy as well as operational methods to combat smuggling, according to the Minister.
