BJP MP Varun Gandhi writes to PM Modi demanding a law on MSP
Over the last year, a historic movement of farmers has swept the country, demanding the repeal of three agricultural laws and the establishment of a legislative minimum support price for crops. I appreciate you being so generous in announcing the abolition of these three laws.
In this movement, over 700 of our farmer brothers and sisters were martyred as they peacefully protested in incredibly difficult and harsh conditions. I feel that all of these innocent lives would not have been lost if this decision had been made sooner. While offering condolences to the families of our farmer brothers and sisters who were martyred in the struggle, I respectfully request that you declare a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for each of them. Furthermore, during this action, all politically driven bogus FLRs that were registered as weapons of harassment against our farmers must be swiftly suppressed.
The farmers’ second demand is that the MSP be made legally binding. Our country is home to more than 85% of small and marginal farmers. We must ensure that these farmers receive fair pricing for their commodities in order to empower them. This movement will not end until this demand is met, and there will be widespread anger among them, which will manifest itself in various forms. As a result, it is critical for farmers to obtain the mandatory MSP guarantee for their crops. The MSP should also be calculated using the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices’ C2+50% algorithm. In this context, I respectfully beg that the administration approve this demand as soon as possible in the interests of our country. This will provide our farmers with a significant level of economic security, and their situation will vastly improve.
Many prominent authorities have made controversial statements in response to our agitating farmers. On October 3, five of our farmer brothers were crushed to death by automobiles in Lakhimpur Kheri as a result of such words and the hostile attitude fostered around the movement. This tragic act is a stain on our democratic process. It is my plea to you that suitable harsh action be taken against the Union Minister who is linked to this affair, so that a fair investigation may be conducted.
Constitutionality, debate, and empathy are the foundations of democracy. Farmers expect you to respond to their concerns in a timely and respectful manner. I believe that by accepting the requests of the farmers in accordance with our nation’s democratic and constitutional values, you will gain even more respect in the country. I’m hoping you’ll make a decision on this topic shortly.
