The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has started inspecting the first batch of around 50,000 taxpayers for suspected violations in the Financial Year 2017-18. This was the year when GST was introduced.

Because this was the year of GST implementation, these returns are only for the first nine months of the year.

Field formations have been authorized to initiate examination of GST identity numbers (GSTINs) based on Artificial Intelligence inputs and risk assessment parameters agreed by the department, following directives issued by CBIC chairman Mr. Vivek Johri.

Breaking: CBIC to introduce mandatory quarterly scrutiny of GST Returns

“To begin the process, the Directorate General of Analytics and Risk Management (DGARM) has shared the information with all field formations.” The Directorate General of Systems and Data Management (DGARM) has been entrusted with having the data evaluated, along with their teams and zonal chiefs,” sources stated.

The screening of GST returns is based on a “consistent methodology of scrutiny,” according to insiders. “It was begun to bring in transparency and promote compliance to plug tax leakages that remain undiscovered in the system.”
