The total number of subscribers to the National Pension System (NPS) and the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) has surpassed 6.62 crore, and the total Asset Under Management (AUM) has surpassed Rs.10 lakh crore (Rs. 10,00,000 crore).

The segment wise status of the NPS and APY as on 25.08.2023:

The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) regularly implements initiatives to improve financial education, enabling subscribers to make well-informed decisions and leverage the benefits of the formal financial sector while maintaining a clear understanding of associated risks and trade-offs.

The National Pension System (NPS) has been introduced for all government employees (excluding the armed forces) who joined the Central Government on or after January 1, 2004. Most state/territorial governments have also notified the National Pension System (NPS) of their new workers. NPS has been made optional available to all Indian citizens since May 1, 2009. Furthermore, on June 1, 2015, the Atal Pension Yojana was introduced, providing the much-needed push to social security programmes.

PFRDA annually commemorates October 1st as “National Pension System Diwas (NPS Diwas)” in order to promote pension and retirement planning. This effort helps Indian residents achieve financial self-sufficiency in their post-retirement years.

In honour of NPS Diwas this year, the PFRDA has organised a month-long series of digital media and promotional campaigns. These efforts are deliberately planned to mark NPS Diwas and successfully emphasise the need of pension planning to subscribers and the general public.
