IIT Delhi was established in August 1961 by Humayun Kabir Minister of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. In 1961, the first admissions were conducted. The National Council of Educational Research and Training is located to the south, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Complex is to the west, the Sri Aurobindo Marg is to the east, and the New Ring Road runs through the middle of the 320 acres (or 1.3 km2) that together make up the current campus. It received full university status, allowing it to set its academic policies, administer exams and issue degrees.

A member of the Viceroy’s executive council for education at the time, Sh. N.R. Sircar initially pitched the concept of IIT. His suggestions were followed and in 1950 Kharagpur became the home of the first Indian Institute of Technology. Such Institutes ought to be established around the nation, according to recommendations made by Shri Sircar in his report. After approving the Sircar Committee’s suggestions, the government decided to build new technology institutes with the support of friendly nations willing to provide a hand. The USSR made the initial assistance offer, agreeing to work with UNESCO to create an institute in Bombay. The Institutes of Technology in Delhi, Kanpur and Madras, collaborated with West Germany, the US and the UK respectively.
