The IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi Stand Up among the Top 150 Universities. The QS World University Ranking 2025 edition has been released which shows many Indian Universities which need improvement. Impressively, 61% of Indian universities have improved their positions in the rankings, with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) achieving the highest position among Indian universities. Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained its title again as being the world’s best for the 13th time. The IIT Delhi stands out for the employability of its graduates and has been ranked 44th globally in the world in the employment outcomes category.

IIT Bombay has made impressive progress, a leap of 31 places from the position of 149th in 2024 to 118th in the 2025 rankings. With this achievement, IIT Bombay has cemented its position as India’s leading university on the global stage. Additionally, IIT Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore have made significant progress. IIT Delhi has climbed 47 places from 197th to 150th, while IISc climbed 14 places from 225th to 211th.

“The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (118th) stands out as the national pioneer. IIT Bombay’s steady advancements in research quality and reputation have driven its rise to noticeable quality. Over the past six years, it has significantly progressed its Employer Reputation ranking from 102nd to 63rd and progressed its Citations per Faculty rank from 226th to 116th. However, the institution’s internationalization metrics still require improvement to completely realize its potential as a globally differing institution. IIT Bombay moreover leads broadly in Academic Reputation, placing 131st in this key indicator,” the statement said.

It further said that from 2018 to 2022, IIT-Bombay created 143,800 citations from 15,905 academic papers, reflecting a research growth of approximately 17%. Its research basically focuses on Engineering & Technology and Natural Sciences, with particularly impactful collaborative work in Astrophysics. “The quality of IIT Bombay’s research is further illustrated by the fact that 30% of its output is published in the top 10% of academic journals by impact, outperforming the worldwide average by 6% and the Indian normal by 15%, ” adding to the statement.

In the case of IIT Delhi, the performance progressed in the research impact and research network indicators. “From 2018 to 2022, IIT Delhi published 16,439 academic papers, producing 221,496 citations and achieving a research development of approximately 47%. This output makes it India’s fifth most beneficial research institution. The quality of its research is highlighted by the fact that 29% of its output is published in the top 10% of academic journals by impact, as characterized by CiteScore, outperforming the worldwide average by 5% and the Indian average by 15%,” the QS said. One of the most notable improvements has been achieved by Delhi University (DU), which has climbed 79 places from 407th to 328th in 2024, securing its seventh position among Indian universities.
