Education Ministry Informs Lok Sabha: Over 8.94 Lakh Students Departed in 2023 to Pursue Studies Overseas
In a written response to the Lok Sabha, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that 8,94,783 students pursued higher education overseas in the previous year. As of 20th July of this year, more than 3.60 lakh students had studied abroad.
The Ministry of Home Affairs’ Bureau of Immigration (BoI) keeps track of Indian arrival and exit information, according to the education minister’s statement.
“The decision to study overseas is a personal one. Furthermore, there are no limitations on the movement of students across international borders; however, this is subject to a number of conditions, including suitability for a certain field of study, affordability, availability of bank loans, and exposure to new cultures. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader responded to a question regarding the reasons behind student migration by saying, “The purpose of Indians traveling abroad for higher education is captured manually based either on their verbal disclosure at the time of immigration clearance or the type of visa obtained for the destination country.”

The union minister went on to say that the government has improved access to higher education through a number of initiatives. As a result, there were 1,168 universities in 2021–22 as opposed to 760 in 2014–15, and 45,473 colleges in 2021–22 as opposed to 38,498 in 2014–15.
The total number of students enrolled in higher education grew from 3.42 crore in 2014–15 to roughly 4.33 crore in 2021–2022.He said that the number of female enrolled climbed from 1.57 crore in 2014–15 to 2.07 crore in 2021–22.
