On June 25, 2015, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) was introduced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA); the yojana is the backbone of India’s “Housing for All” mission. The aim of this scheme is to provide houses to urban families at affordable rates. The deadline for completing homes approved by March 31, 2022, has been extended.

PMAY-U Due Date Extended

The due date for PMAY-U has been extended and is now shifted to December 30, 2025. Which has provided additional time to finish the approved homes and ensure that beneficiaries can avail themselves of their housing entitlements.

What is PMAY-U 2.0?

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) is a scheme launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The aim of this scheme is to build, purchase, or rent affordable houses in urban areas and provide assistance to the beneficiaries.

Under this scheme, families belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low-Income Group (LIG), and Middle-Income Group (MIG) who do not own a pucca house (all-weather dwelling) anywhere in India are covered.

PMAY-U: Ways to Enjoy Benefit

PMAY-U helps urban families own a home via four main ways:

  1. Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC): Provide assistance to people in building their own houses.
  2. Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP): Works with government and private builders to create housing projects.
  3. Affordable Rental Housing (ARH): Offers affordable homes for rent.
  4. Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS): Provides discounts on interest rates for home loans.

In accordance with the official website of PMAY, “In pursuance of Government’s vision of facilitating Housing for All, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India is implementing Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Urban (PMAY-U) – ‘Housing for All’ Mission since 25.06.2015. The original mission period was up to 31.03.2022 which has been extended till 31.12.2025 for completion of houses sanctioned up to 31.03.2022, without changing funding pattern and implementation methodology of the scheme.”

PMAY-U: Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria required to seek the benefit of this scheme are

Urban area rising families belonging to EWS/LIG/MIG categories, who don’t have any pucca house in their name or any family member’s name, in parts of the country, are eligible to enjoy the benefits of this scheme.

PMAY-U: How to Check Eligibility Criteria Online

By following the steps below, the eligibility criteria for PMAY 2.0 can be checked.

  • Step 1: Visit the official website of PMAY 2.0, i.e., https://pmaymis.gov.in.
  • Step 2: On the homepage, click on the link reading “Apply for PMAY-U 2.0.”
  • Step 3: Review the guidelines mentioned and click on the “Click to Proceed” button.
  • Step 4: You should possess all the required documents (listed below).
  • Step 5: Fill in the eligibility form, and now click on “Eligibility Check.”
  • Step 6: Now, fill in your Aadhaar details: mention and verify your Aadhaar number with the help of mobile OTP.

Fill in the correct personal and financial details on the form and upload all the necessary documents. Fill in the correct captcha code visible on the screen. Check the details filled in by you once and submit the form by clicking on the “Save” button. Keep a print of the submitted form for future reference.

By following the steps of satisfying the eligibility criteria, submitting all the required documents, and applying online at the official portal or CSCs, etc., beneficiaries can claim benefits of this scheme, such as financial assistance, subsidies, or rental housing benefits.

To apply for PMAY-U, visit a nearby Common Service Centre (CSC) or a bank listed under the scheme. Pay a small application fee and submit the filled form along with the necessary documents.

Make sure you have these documents ready:

  • Aadhaar Information: Applicant’s Aadhaar number, full name, and date of birth.
  • Family Aadhaar Details: Aadhaar numbers of all family members.
  • Bank Details: An active bank account linked to Aadhaar, including account number, bank name, branch, and IFSC code.
  • Proof of Income: Upload as a PDF file (maximum size: 100 KB).
  • Land Ownership Document (for BLC applicants): Upload as a PDF file (maximum size: 1 MB).
