NPCI Introduces New Updates in UPI from August 1, 2025

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has played a vital role in transforming India into a digitally empowered nation. It allows users to transfer money easily and in a secure way. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has made several changes over the last six months to boost the performance of UPI. These changes include reducing the response time for UPI APIs, displaying the bank-registered name of the payee, and introducing the Chargeback limits.

As the month of July is about to end, the NPCI is making some significant changes from August 1, 2025, to enhance the speed, safety and security of UPI payments. If you are a regular UPI user, it is important to know these changes to continue using UPI without any hassle. These changes can affect how you make payments and manage your transactions. Let us know about the significant changes in UPI starting from August 1, 2025.

Restriction on Checking Account Balance

All users will be allowed to check their balance only 50 times a day on each UPI app. This change is being introduced after NPCI observed that the delays and outages in the UPI server were due to users making repeated requests, such as refreshing a payment status many times or checking their account balance every minute. This overloaded the system and affected the speed of transactions for all users.

Restriction on Viewing Linked Bank Account

Starting from August 1, 2025, users will not be able to view the bank accounts that are linked with their mobile number more than 25 times a day. This will reduce the burden on the UPI system due to repeated requests.

Restriction on Viewing Transaction Status

Many times, the UPI transaction gets stuck or shows pending. Now, from August 1, 2025, users will only be able to check the status of such transactions 3 times with a 90-second gap between each check. This will help in reducing the extra burden on the UPI system.

Time limit for Autopay Transactions

Now the Autopay Transactions, such as Spotify premium, Netflix subscriptions, SIP Payments, Insurance Premium, etc., will have a fixed time slot in which these transactions will be processed. These slots include:

  • Before 10 AM
  • Between 1 PM and 5 PM
  • After 9:30 PM

What Should UPI Users Do Now?

Since these changes will impact millions of UPI users, here is what the users should do:

  • Check the balance only when required.
  • Carefully verify the payee’s name displayed on your screen.
  • Use your chargeback option with a limit.
  • Schedule your auto-pay transaction debit during the approved non-peak hours.
