Tata Steel Challenges Rs 1,755 Crore Demand Notice for excess coal extraction Before Revisional Authority

Tata Steel Limited has challenged a demand notice of about Rs 1,755 crore issued by the District Mining Office, Ramgarh, Jharkhand. The revision application has been filed before the Revisional Authority, Ministry of Coal, Government of India.

Background of the Case

The case is related to an alleged excess coal extraction. On April 3, 2026, the company received a demand notice dated March 30, 2026, from the District Mining Office. The authority claimed that for FY 2000-01 to FY 2006-07, Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Colliery had extracted 1,62,40,399 MT of mineral coal, which was beyond the permissible limits.

However, Tata Steel believes that the demand lacks justification and a substantive basis. Therefore, it has filed a revisional application to challenge this demand notice.
