Income Tax Dept Launches Online Challan Correction Facility for Taxpayers
A new system has been launched by the Income Tax Department that will allow taxpayers to directly address certain issues regarding their tax payment challans through the e-filing website.
This move has been made in an effort to help expedite the process of reflecting tax credits and minimise the need for seeking help from assessing officers.
As per the new scheme, PAN holders are able to rectify important details regarding the challan, which include the following:
But there are certain time frames within which such amendments can be made, and they cannot be made for TDS-related challans done via TAN.
What is a Challan Correction Request?
Challan correction requests give individuals an opportunity to correct mistakes that may be made during online tax payments. The challan is important because it gives vital information such as the assessment year, tax slab, and payment mode, among other information.
This problem has been resolved by the Income Tax Department by way of providing an online correction system for eligible taxpayers to correct some challan information through the e-filing website.
Which challans can be corrected online?
Online correction of challans is allowed only for those challans that are “unconsumed” – the challans which have not yet been utilised during the processing of tax returns. This service is presently applicable for challans related to Assessment Year 2020-21 and onwards.
For older assessment year challans, the taxpayer shall communicate with the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer. Furthermore, only one application for online correction of challans will be allowed. Any other corrections will be done only by the assessing officer.
The taxpayers need to keep in mind that different errors will have different correction periods. The modification in the tax year and assessment year can only be made during the period of seven days from the date of payment of the challan or creation of the CIN number.
This request cannot be made after the lapse of this period of seven days.
The taxpayers can seek corrections in relation to the major head and minor head within 30 days from either the date of payment or the date of CIN generation.
Currently, correction in the minor head can be done only in cases involving advance tax (100), self-assessment tax (300), and demand as regular assessment tax (400). In case of any other type of tax payments, the taxpayers will have to approach the jurisdictional assessing officer.
How about TDS Challans?
The new system of correcting the challan will not work for ITNS 281 challans issued for TDS and TCS payments using the Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number. This process can only be done using the TRACES portal.
Tax consultants have brought to light the fact that errors in the financial year entered into the TDS challan could prove to be a difficult issue to sort out online, which could lead to mismatching of TDS credits, delay in reflecting credits, increased tax liability when filing tax returns, and the need for reconciling the entries. Although these problems are not directly addressed in the income tax department’s manual, they are commonly faced issues.
Steps for Rectifying a Challan Online
Access the e-filing website of income tax and click on ‘Services’, then ‘Challan Correction‘. Initiate a correction application, choose the kind of correction, find your challan from the Tax Year / Assessment Year or CIN, and make the necessary corrections. Review the changes made, do an e-verification and then file the request. The taxpayer can check the status of the rectification through online mode.
The Importance of the New Correction Facility
Challan errors usually result in credit mismatches and delayed refunds. The new correction facility via the online portal ensures that taxpayers can sort out such issues faster without involving the tax department in such cases.
