Aadhaar Card will now expire with death of Cardholder
The UIDAI and the Register General of India have begun to discuss and work on a new method in which the Aadhaar card will be cancelled whenever a death certificate is issued for the person. Once a death certificate is issued, the agency in charge will send a message to the deceased’s relatives, asking for permission to deactivate the Aadhaar number.
The move will have to be implemented in collaboration with state governments, about which conversations are now underway, they noted. When the death certificate is provided, the family member will be required to share their Aadhaar number.
The move follows the implementation of a scheme by UIDAI to allot Aadhaar while issuing birth certificates. So far, more than 20 states have implemented the system, and others are anticipated to follow suit. The facilities are part of the Aadhaar 2.0 initiative, which aims to introduce new features while enhancing credibility.
UIDAI has initiated an update effort for persons who were handed cards more than ten years ago, after registering over 135 crore across the country.
This action would be prompted by the Indian government‘s desire to curb identity theft and fake identity crimes. This would also prohibit the deceased’s friends and family from taking advantage of their death and taking out loans or using other banking services in their name.
Overall, this move may be incredibly advantageous to the average man; nevertheless, it will take a very long time to complete this laborious effort.
