Bank Holiday 2023: Banks to remain closed for 16 days in September; Check Bank Holiday List

During the month of September 2023, all public and private banks in India will observe a total of 16 days of banking holidays. These bank holidays will include both national and regional holidays, as well as the traditional weekend breaks, which include the second and fourth Saturdays, as well as all Sundays.

September is an important month in India because of the celebration of many festivals such as Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Sri Krishna Ashtami, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Eid-e-Milad, Indrajatra, and others. In addition, banks will be closed on specific weekend days, notably Sundays, the second Saturday, and the fourth Saturday, in compliance with the terms of the Holiday Under Negotiable Instruments Act. The month will see a total of 16 bank holidays, which will include both national and regional observances.

While these bank holidays are in place, essential financial services such as online banking and ATM access will remain available for customers convenience. It’s worth noting that some of the holidays stated are specific to certain states or areas, while others are generic public holidays.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) divides bank holidays into three categories: those defined under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

The RBI has issued the list of holidays for the year 2023 as part of its yearly calendar. According to this plan, all public and private sector banks in India would close for up to 16 days in September 2023, including weekends. It is crucial to note, however, that the period of closures may not be uniformly 16 days throughout all states and areas.
