Breaking: Will Banks remain open Only 5 Days a Week from April?

The current news report has created a buzz, claiming that banks across India might switch to a 5-day workweek starting April 2025. It claims that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced a new rule for this change. The news has grabbed the attention of many customers and bank employees, leaving them interested if banks will now stay closed on all Saturdays and Sundays from next month.

PIB (Press Information Bureau) fact-checked this claim and confirmed it as false. According to PIB FactCheck, a media report claimed that starting in April, banks across the country would operate only 5 days a week under a new RBI regulation. However, this news is not true.

According to media reports, the RBI has made a decision that could limit bank operations to just five days a week. This means banks will stay closed on Saturdays, similar to the schedule of government offices that observe holidays on both Saturdays and Sundays. The proposed change is anticipated to take effect in April 2025.

The RBI (Reserve Bank of India) has not officially declared any plan in which they are shifting banks to a five-day workweek. As of now, banks continue to operate on the first, third and fifth Saturdays of each month, following the existing schedule.

There have been ongoing talks between the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banking Association (IBA) about implementing a 5-day workweek for banks. Banking unions support this idea and say it would improve employees’ work-life balance and align with international banking standards.

At present, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, as well as on all Sundays. They remain open on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays. Although the RBI has not officially confirmed any changes, banking unions and officials are in discussions about the possibility of a 5-day workweek.
