Bank customers may face disruption in branch-related services for three days from September 28 to September 30, 2026, if the nationwide bank strike proposed by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) goes ahead.

The proposed strike comes just after the regular weekend bank holidays. Banks will remain closed on September 26, which is the second Saturday of the month, followed by Sunday, September 27. This means bank branches could remain closed for five days in a row, from September 26 to September 30, if the strike takes place as planned.

Major banks, including State Bank of India (SBI) and Union Bank of India, have advised customers to complete important branch-related work before the proposed strike. SBI said it is making efforts to keep essential banking services available during the strike period, while Union Bank said branch operations may be affected on all three days.

Customers who need to visit a branch for important work are therefore advised to complete their transactions before September 26. Those who need cash can also withdraw money in advance or use ATMs and other available cash withdrawal facilities during the closure period.

What SBI advised customers

SBI has asked customers to complete essential banking transactions before the strike dates. The bank has also advised customers to use ATMs and ADWMs for cash requirements and customer service centres for available services.

Customers can also use SBI's internet banking, YONO, mobile banking, UPI and other digital banking channels for routine transactions during the strike period.

What Union Bank advised customers

Union Bank of India has also asked customers to use alternative banking channels for routine banking needs. Its mobile banking, internet banking, ATMs and ADWMs, business correspondent points, UPI and other digital services are expected to remain available.

Will ATMs and UPI work during the bank strike?

Customers can continue to use ATMs, UPI, mobile banking and internet banking for transactions that do not require a visit to a bank branch. However, cash availability at ATMs may vary depending on the location and machine.

Customers who have important branch-related work should plan ahead and complete it before September 26 to avoid possible disruption during the five-day period.
