Banking Crisis Exposed! Shocking Workload & Harassment Putting Employees’ Lives at Risk
A user named Prabin Biswas at platform 'X' (formerly Twitter) has written a representation to the Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and the Government of India, requesting an urgent intervention to address exploitation, work overload, and inhuman treatment of bank officers.
He has written the representation on behalf of the All India We Bankers Officers Association. He tried to catch the government's immediate attention to the worst situations faced by thousands of bank officers nationwide. He flagged that day by day, their members are facing:
- Too much workload, often more than what is fair or legally allowed.
- Unkind treatment, insults, and forceful behaviour from senior officials or management.
- No proper work-life balance, with very long working hours and increasing stress.
- Order an independent inquiry into the working conditions, workload, harassment, and the reasons behind the recent suicides among bank officers.
- Strictly ensure labour laws are effectively implemented in the nation to stop excessive working hours, threats, intimidation, and unfair punishment by management.
- Issue binding rules to ensure fair sharing of work, humane treatment, and respect for employees’ dignity in all banks.
- Establish a robust complaint redressal system under the supervision of the ministry. The system must contain proper whistleblower protection and a time-bound complaint resolution mechanism.
- Make employee welfare measures compulsory, including regular mental health check-ups, counselling services, and emergency helplines for all bank staff.
- Ensure accountability so that officials responsible for harassment or pressure face strict disciplinary action. This will enable them to think hundreds of times before performing such an activity again.
