Big Update! UPI Soon To Consider Face ID And Fingerprint Scans Instead of PINs

Many popular digital transaction apps are widely used in India for many payment needs. including UPI, PhonePe and others. Digital Payment Apps will soon be removing the PIN from the payment and will be just considering face ID and biometrics.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is planning to allow Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions to be done via biometric authentication methods like Face ID and fingerprint scans so that users do not need to enter a PIN while making payments.

Benefits of " Biometric Authentication" Payments:

The purpose of the above proposal lies in the  uniqueness of biometric traits. Unlike PINs, which can be easily stolen or fraudulently acquired, facial features and fingerprints are naturally tied to the user and are considerably harder to copy.

An Expert pointed out that the potential change would benefit millions, especially senior citizens and rural users. Expert says that it will become easier for users to make transactions, as the new changes will not require memorizing a PIN and will lead to a major drop in UPI related frauds.

Consideration For Non PIN Transactions:

Currently, UPI users are required to enter a 4 to 6 digit PIN every time they make a transaction/payment. But NPCI is considering disturbance in this process, where biometric authentication that is already inserted into most smartphones could act as a protected, secure as well as convenient alternative.

Aadhaar-linked biometric data may also be used in the future, but it calls for strict policies and supporting infrastructure due to the sensitive nature of such data.

Whereas, NPCI has not issued any official information on the same matter, the discussions are ongoing to simplify the transaction processes and improve security.

Integrating Biometrics on all Devices and Apps:

Reports specifies that the initiative would depend on smartphone-level biometric authorization systems which is already in use for unlocking devices. This would pave the way for UPI apps, including PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm, to register Face ID or fingerprint authentication as the final verification security.

Some experts also alert that biometrics alone may not be sufficient. in case, If someone’s smartphone is stolen, it could potentially provide direct access to UPI connected bank accounts, hence calling for a multi-factor authentication method to guard against misuse.

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Payment System Indicators for June 2025, UPI transaction volumes surged to 18.39 billion, with total value reaching Rs 24.03 lakh crore.

As the UPI is increasing in India’s digital payments ecosystem, the proposal, if executed strictly, could set a new standard for secure and user-friendly transactions.
