CBI Court Sentences Ex-Cotton Purchase Officer to Rigorous Imprisonment for 5 Years in Rs 94 Lakh DA Case

CBI Court has convicted ex-Cotton Corporation of India officer and his wife in a disproportionate assets case, sentencing them to five and four years of RI, respectively.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court, Hyderabad, Telangana, convicted and sentenced an accused named Majeti Venkata Bhavani Prasad, an ex-Cotton Purchase Officer in the Cotton Corporation of India, to Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for a period of Five Years. Additionally, a penalty amounting to Rs 1 lakh has been levied on him.

Conversely, Prasad's wife, Smt Majeti Priyanka, has been sentenced to Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for Four Years, with a penalty of Rs 50,000. They are both alleged to have been involved in a Disproportionate Assets (DA) case.

CBI had registered a case against them on November 03, 2016. According to a press release, Prasad, encouraged by his wife, Smt. Priyanka, while working in the role of Cotton Purchase Officer in the Cotton Corporation of India, Warangal, during the check period between January 01, 2010, and February 21, 2015, had assets and pecuniary resources to the extent of approximately Rs 94.17 lakh in his and his family members' names. These assets were 291.73% more than his legal income, from which this additional money or assets came.

The CBI had furnished a charge sheet on May 07, 2018, against the accused on completion of investigation in the present matter. Accordingly, the accused Prasad was convicted and apprehended.
