CBI Sentences Former Superintendent of Central Excise to Four Years’ Rigorous Imprisonment in Bribery Case
On February 26, 2026, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court, Siliguri, sentenced Achintya Kumar Pramanik, a former Superintendent of Central Excise, to rigorous imprisonment of four years in a bribery case. Additionally, a penalty amounting to Rs. 40,000 is imposed.
Pramanik was employed in the office of the Assistant Commissioner, Central Excise and Service Tax, Cooch Behar Division, Cooch Behar, at the time of the incident. A complaint was filed against the accused for demanding a bribe of Rs. 100,000 from the proprietor of a private firm. Subsequently, CBI registered a complaint on September 14, 2015.
Thereafter, on September 15, 2015, CBI laid down a trap to catch the accused red-handed at the point of accepting the demanded bribe of Rs. 30,000 from the complainant. Their mission was successful; immediately at the place of crime, the amount was recovered from his possession.
After completing its investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against him on December 30, 2015. Following the trial, the court found him guilty and announced the sentence on February 26, 2026, awarding four years of rigorous imprisonment along with the monetary penalty.
