CBSE to Launch "Sugar Board" in Affiliated Schools To Address Diabetes in Students The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently noticed an increase in the number of students suffering from diabetes. Hence, the board decided to take serious action to reduce the number by ordering its affiliated schools to launch "Sugar Boards." These boards provide students with knowledge about the importance of reducing sugar content in meals and how dangerous sugar is for human health. The "Sugar Boards" are developed to provide students with teaching resources, making students aware of the side effects of consuming excessive amounts of sugar. Excessive sugar in meals can lead to long-term chronic diseases such as diabetes, which can be decreased by CBSE action. The action also highlights the importance of providing health education at an early age for promoting better health habits in children. It indicates that educational authorities are taking care of their responsibilities in promoting the overall well-being of students, along with improvement in academics.

CBSE Board Official Circular: What's There in the Circular

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued an official circular on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, that mentions the important details regarding the implementation of "Sugar Boards." These include:
  • Suggested daily sugar consumption.
  • Sugar content should be there in common foods such as junk food and cold drinks.
  • Health damages are linked to the overconsumption of sugar.
  • Healthier dietary substitutes.
  • Reasons associated with concerns.
The circular sent to affiliated CBSE school administrators spotlights the main reason behind high sugar intake, also associated with easy access to processed foods, sugary snacks, and soft drinks within school locations. The board also highlights the fact that high sugar consumption can increase the risk of diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, and other metabolic problems that adversely affect children's health and mental conditions, ultimately decreasing their academic performance.

CBSE Board Official Circular: Research Findings

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken this major decision to launch "Sugar Boards" after doing great research. In their research, experts discovered that children between the ages of 4 and 10 years consume more than 13% of their daily calories from sugar, and those between the ages of 11 and 18 years consume almost 15% of their daily calories from sugar. Both of these figures have crossed the suggested daily sugar consumption limit of 5%.

CBSE Board Official Circular: Sugar Consumption Board Started by NCPCR

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) started this initiative after a suggestion from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which works to protect children's rights, especially for those who are most at risk. Now, schools must put up "sugar boards" that show information to help students understand the dangers of eating too much sugar.
