Custom Officer Plus 3 other booked for 4 Years for accepting bribe of Rs.5 Lakhs
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Custom Officer and 3 others for accepting a bribe of Rs.5 Lakhs and sentenced for 4 years.
The Court of Special Judges for CBI cases, Ghaziabad has sentenced four accused including Sh. Shashi Kant, then Dy. Commissioner (Customs), ICD, Dadri, Gautam Buddha Nagar (UP) to 4 years of Imprisonment with a fine of Rs.8 Lakh; his wife Ms. Sweta to 2 years of Imprisonment with a fine of Rs.4 Lakh; Sh. Narender Kumar Chugh, then Chief Promoter of M/s. Aban Exim Pvt. Ltd. (Pvt. Person) to 4 years of Imprisonment with a fine of Rs.8 Lakh; and Sh. Satish Gupta, (middleman) to 4 years of Imprisonment with a fine of Rs.8 Lakh in a case related to bribery of Rs.5 lakh.
The total fine imposed by the Court comes to Rs.28 Lakh.
The CBI registered the current case on November 29, 2013, against the accused, Sh. Shashi Kant, then Dy. Commissioner (Customs); Sh. Narender Kumar Chug; Sh. Satish Gupta (middleman); and other unknown persons.
It was said that Sh. Narender Kumar Chug approached the middleman Shri Satish Gupta to release his company’s tyre shipment, which had been detained by the Customs Department at ICD, Dadri, Gautam Budha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh.
It was further stated that Shri Satish Gupta approached Shri Shashi Kant, then Deputy Commissioner (Customs), ICD Dadri, to have the company’s seized consignment cleared positively. Shri Shashi Kant then wanted a bribe of Rs.5 lakh from Shri Narender Kumar Chugh via claimed middleman Shri Satish Gupta for showing favour.
CBI laid a trap and apprehended Shri Narender Kumar Chugh while paying a bribe of Rs.5 lakh on 29.11.2013 to Ms Sweta (w/o. Shri Shashi Kant), who received the same at her residence at NOIDA, on behalf of the said public servant.
Searches were undertaken at the accused’s residential and official places. The defendant Sh. Shashi Kant, Sh.Narender Kumar Chug and Sh. Satish Gupta were arrested on November 30, 2013 and were later granted bail.
During the investigation, evidence was gathered against the defendants, and a chargesheet in the case was filed on January 29, 2014. During the trial, the CBI called 31 prosecution witnesses and presented a number of documents to the Court.
After the trial, the Court held the accused guilty and accordingly sentenced them.
