The Delhi government’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection increased 22% to Rs. 41351 crore in the first three quarters of this financial year (April-December), officials stated on Tuesday.

The first three quarters of 2021–2022 recorded the government GST collection of Rs. 33,691 crore.

Due to the COVID pandemic’s interruptions, the Delhi government’s tax revenue fell during the previous two financial years.

“The lockdown caused a decline in tax revenue in the years 2020–21. The situation improved the following year (2021–2022), and this year’s collections are strong thanks to the recovery of the economy “said one of the officials.

In its budget for 2022–2023, the Delhi government forecasted tax revenue of a total of Rs 47,700 crore. With average monthly collections currently hovering around 4,500 crore, officials predicted a rise in revenue collection of between 15 and 20% over the projected amount. An official announced, “We will now conduct a mop-up exercise in the final quarter.”

Officials claimed that the central GST component, which is ignored by the states when calculating their own collections, is included in the ministry of finance’s calculation of GST revenue. However, the states also include in their calculations the money they receive from VAT, a tax imposed on the sale of alcoholic beverages and petroleum products.
