Delhi GST Department Faces Major Shake-Up After CM Rekha Gupta’s Surprise Inspection
The GST department has faced a significant administrative reshuffle after a recent surprise visit of Delhi Chief Minister (CM), Rekha Gupta, to the State GST office on April 08, 2026.
During her visit she noted that several GST officials were absent, clearly indicating non-compliance with attendance rules and discipline. Considering such serious negligence by the tax authorities, she decided to frame strict rules related to attendance and punctuality.
Subsequently after the visit, she ordered the immediate issuance of show cause notices (SCNs) to all these officers missing from duty, asking them to explain the reason behind this negligence towards their duties. She also pointed out the compulsion of biometric attendance for every official. Officials have been asked to check biometric attendance records and improve how services are provided to the public.
As a result of this inspection, a major reshuffle has been announced in the GST department by the government. Under this reshuffle, 162 staff members, including 3 Assistant Commissioners, 58 Section Officers (Grade-I), 22 Assistant Section Officers (Grade-II), 74 Senior Assistants (Grade-III), and 5 Junior Assistants (Grade-IV), have been transferred in one of the largest changes in recent months. Officers who had been working in the same post for a long time were transferred.
Taxpayers visiting the tax office often complained about its slow services and repeated visits for even minor works, and several officers were not even available on their duties. This showed that the department was not working efficiently. Officials said this action is part of a larger effort by the Delhi government to improve discipline by doing surprise inspections and checking whether rules are being followed in different departments.
Earlier reviews had already found problems like officers being absent, delays in work, and poor service. Because of this, the government has started taking corrective steps in many offices. The Chief Minister clearly said that public services must not suffer and everyone in the system will be held responsible. The government believes that this reshuffle will help improve the GST department’s working, making it more disciplined, efficient, and responsive to taxpayers.
