The 57th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council will be held in New Delhi on September 12, 2026, according to an office memorandum issued by the GST Council Secretariat.
The meeting will begin at 11 am on Saturday. A meeting of GST officers will be held a day earlier, on September 11, starting at 11 am.
The venue and detailed agenda for the meetings will be announced separately.
GST Registration Reforms Likely to Be Discussed
The Council may discuss steps to make GST registration easier for businesses that pass on tax credits of more than Rs 2.5 lakh every month.
It may also consider changes to make the GST registration cancellation process more automated and simpler.
Currently, central and state GST authorities follow different procedures for registering businesses that meet the specified tax-credit threshold. This has created uncertainty and difficulties for some taxpayers.
Meeting Again After Over a Year
The upcoming meeting will be held more than a year after the previous GST Council meeting.
The 56th meeting was held on September 3-4, 2025, when the Centre and states approved a major restructuring of GST rates and tax slabs.
