DGFT joint director jumps from 4th Floor after arrest by CBI in Bribery Case
A Joint Director of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) allegedly jumped to his death from his fourth-floor office following his arrest in a bribery case by CBI.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained 44-year-old Jawri Mal Bishnoi on March 24 for allegedly receiving a Rs 5 lakh bribe. After the arrest, the CBI reportedly searched his office, which was on the fourth level of the building.
The DGFT is a government body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry that is in charge of carrying out the nation's foreign trade policy.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sudhir Desai, the CBI conducted a search operation at Bishnoi's office throughout the night and was about to wrap it up in the morning when the accused suddenly went towards the window and flung himself out of it at around 9.45 am.
Bishnoi fell from the fourth floor, suffering significant injuries. He was transferred to the civil hospital, where medics pronounced him dead, according to the police official. At the Pradyuman Nagar police station, a case of accidental death was reported; additional investigation is currently underway.
A merchant who wanted a no-objection certificate (NOC) to export food cans allegedly paid Bishnoi a total of Rs 9 lakh. The businessman's bank guarantee of Rs. 50 lakh would have been retrievable with the use of the paper, according to the police.
According to the police, the concerned businessman had already provided the DGFT office in Rajkot with the required paperwork to obtain the clearance certificate.
In relation to Bishnoi's passing, the CBI agents who searched his office will be questioned. In the meantime, a crowd of people demonstrated outside the civil hospital, blaming the CBI for Bishnoi's passing. The CBI officers were protected by the police officers working at the hospital, who also took them to the police station for questioning.
