The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), with the assistance of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Mandapam & Ramnad Customs, Preventive Division, intercepted two fishing boats and seized 32.869 kg of foreign origin gold worth Rs.20.21 crore that was smuggled into India from Sri Lanka via the coast in a joint operation.

DRI, Chennai, obtained specific intelligence that foreign-origin gold is being trafficked from Sri Lanka through the Vedhalai coast in Ramnad (TN) by several gangs utilising fishing boats. As a result, DRI officers conducted extensive coastal surveillance with the assistance of ICG and identified the suspected fishing boats.

After a pursuit in the sea, a team of DRI officers and Coast Guard officers apprehended one of the suspected fishing boats on the morning of May 30, 2023. During the interception, the people aboard the fishing boat dumped the illegal cargo into the water. The illegal packet containing 11.6 kg of foreign origin gold valued at Rs.7.13 crore was recovered from the seabed with the assistance of Coast Guard specialist divers and confiscated, along with the boat used to smuggle the gold.

A second suspected fishing boat was discovered on the night of May 30, 2023. Following that, DRI Officers boarded an Indian customs patrol boat and approached the suspected fishing boat, observing from a distance that the boat’s occupants were handing over a parcel to two receivers waiting on the shore.

When the Indian Customs boat approached them from the water, both recipients attempted to flee into the darkness by fleeing with the illegal gold. Officers pursued and apprehended the recipients in the dark.

On examination of the persons, eight packets were found inside a jacket carried by them. Detailed examination led to the recovery of 21.269 kg of foreign origin gold valued at Rs.13.08 crore from the persons and the same was seized along with the boat and a two wheeler used for smuggling the gold.

Further investigation is under progress.
