Equal Fees Or Unequal Prizes: ICAI Cricket Rules Spark Discussion
A cricket tournament organized by the Thane branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has caused a big online argument. The problem is that men's and women's teams have to pay the same registration fee, but the prize money is different for both.
The tournament is planned for May 31, 2025, at TMC Turfpark near Dhaval Hills, Thane (W). All teams have to pay a registration fee of Rs 3,000 per team, which includes GST.
But the prize money amounts have upset many people. The men's winning team will get Rs 8,000, while the runner-up team will get Rs 5,000. However, the women's winning team will only get Rs 5,000 and the runner-up will get Rs 3,500.
This difference in prize money did not go unnoticed. A social media user started an online discussion questioning why the prize money is unequal when both men's and women's teams pay the same registration fee.
People from the public and chartered accountants got involved in heated arguments and gender-based discussions. A few people argued that the difference in prize money is due to women possibly having fewer participants or contributors to the total prize pool.
While countless users argued it was fair, some even started weeping at women's cricket, special attention for women, modern thinking, and feminism, and said chartered accountants think too rationally.
A prominent figure in the tax community suggested that we could check participant totals for each category to determine an appropriate distribution of prize money. He also suggested that we could get women to pay a higher registration fee to even out prize money for all.
There were many points made regarding finance, market forces in general, and costs that were brought forth throughout the debates and have led many to urge that we review the prize structure.
This is not the first time ICAI has faced criticism for decisions that seem unfair to women. Last year, the institute was criticized nationwide during its 2024 International Conference for CA students in Kolkata. Women were reportedly asked to move from the front rows because a religious guest threatened to leave if women were sitting near the stage.
Video footage of the incident showed a committee member saying women should not stand near the stage. This caused severe criticism on social media and led ICAI to start an internal investigation.
Many people were shocked by this incident, especially because it happened at a professional event meant to celebrate chartered accountants' achievements, regardless of their gender.
It should be noted that other tournaments, such as pickleball, chess, or table tennis, held by the Thane ICAI charge everyone the same registration fees and offer the same prizes without drawing a distinction between men and women. The ICAI Thane branch has not made any formal statement about the issues we raised.
In a professional environment where skills and qualifications should be the only measures, creating gender differences causes more than just embarrassment. It creates mistrust, disappointment, and harmful divisions in a place where unity and fairness should be the standard.
