Faceless GST Assessment may take Some Time: GSTN Official

A Top official said on Wednesday that the GST authorities may take some time to implement impersonal inspection of tax returns filed under the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The faceless assessment, which involves no physical connection between the tax officer and the assessee and no physical submission of papers, was originally used by the Income Tax department and was later expanded to Customs.

“We may need some time to implement faceless assessment in GST. GST assessments are associated with a certain jurisdictional officer or unit. It may take some time to change it. Some legislative adjustments would also be necessary to make it successful,” said GST Network Vice President (Services) Jagmal Singh at a Ficci event here.

Indirect tax reform was introduced on July 1, 2017. GST has subsumed 17 local charges, including excise duty, service tax, VAT, and cesses.
