Financial Fraud: Society Loses Rs 96.88 Lakh in Salary Scam, Case Registered Against CA
An 80-year-old man from Santacruz is taking legal action against a chartered accountant and three others. He says they stole nearly Rs 96.88 lakh. The accountant got signatures on cheques from society members, claiming it was for staff salaries, but she put the money in her firm's account. He filed the complaint at the Santacruz police station on May 8th.
The police report states that Purushottam Rohera, who holds the position of chairman in the Shamla Co-operative Society, filed a complaint. In 2020, the society appointed Parande, daughter of a deceased member, as its CA to manage its financial matters.
Parande deceitfully obtained signatures from Rohera, the society’s secretary, and treasurer on cheques, claiming to withdraw funds for staff salaries. Exploiting her father’s reputation, she gained their trust.
In January, society members uncovered Parande's actions: she had liquidated the society's fixed deposits, transferring the funds to both the society's account and her CA firm's bank account. This misappropriation occurred between September 2022 and October 2023 during which she provided counterfeit passbooks to hide her action.
According to an officer Parande, her husband, and two others under sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), and 34 (Common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, an officer said.
