Central Crime Branch (CCB) officers have detained eight people on suspicion of defrauding a city-based man of Rs 40 lakh under the guise of a large profit if he assisted them in applying for an RBI funding scheme.
The accused allegedly persuaded the victim that they are in the atomic energy sector and have a revenue of Rs 75,000 crore. They said that the RBI had sanctioned them Rs 75,000 crore, but that they needed to deposit Rs 120 crore in order to receive the funds. They informed him that if he paid them Rs 40 lakh, they would repay him Rs 7.5 crore in a year. He was even taken to RBI offices in Delhi and Mumbai by the accused.
"The accused took the victim inside the RBI building and introduced him to a few people who displayed a fake account showing they were sanctioned Rs 75,000 crore and needed to pay Rs 120 crore to get the money," said SD Sharanappa, joint commissioner of police (crime).
When asked how the accused managed to take the victim inside the protected RBI premises and whether an insider was involved, Sharanappa said police were looking into the matter.
The accused are AN Ramesh Kumar, 36, of Ramanagara; JC Manjunatha, 34, of Gaanakallu near Kengeri; S Ashok Kumar, 42, of NR Pura in Chikkamagaluru; N Rajkumar, 51, of Kengeri; K Gangaraju, 32, of Bidadi; B Kamaresh, 44, of Mysuru; VC Murthy Nayka, 27, of Ballari; and G Siddaraju, 23, of Kanakapura.
