The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is an important intelligence and enforcement agency in anti-smuggling matters under the supervision of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Government of India.
DRI, with its headquarters in New Delhi, 12 zonal units, 35 regional units, and 15 sub-regional units staffed by slightly more than 800 officials, has been carrying out its duties of preventing and identifying cases of smuggling of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, gold, diamonds, precious metals, counterfeit currency notes, foreign currency, cigarettes, arms, ammunition, and explosives, wildlife items, SCOMET items, hazardous and environmentally sensitive materials, antiques, etc., and taking harsh action against the organised crime groups involved.
DRI also investigates company fraud and occurrences of customs duty evasion. DRI serves as the CBIC's primary point of contact for sharing information and providing investigative assistance to partner administrations under existing bilateral and international Customs Assistance Agreements.
On December 4, 2023, DRI will celebrate its 66th anniversary. To mark the anniversary, Founding Day celebrations shall be organised in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Shri Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs and Special Secretary to the Government of India, will inaugurate the event, and the Guest of Honour will be Shri Rajiv Talwar, Member (Compliance Management), CBIC member Smt. V. Rama Mathew (IT, Taxpayer Services and Technology), CBIC prominent representatives from Indian Law Enforcement Agencies, and senior officials from the CBIC will also be present during the celebrations.
On this occasion, the annual "Smuggling in India" report, which summarises DRI's performance and experience over the past financial year as well as trends in anti-smuggling and commercial fraud, will be released, as per tradition.
Officers and staff are the vital components of every organisation and are accountable for its achievement and growth. DRI Utkrisht Seva Samman and DRI Veerta Prashasti Patra will also be conferred on this occasion to acknowledge their leadership and remarkable efforts in the line of duty.
