Indian CAs Face Oversupply Crisis: X User Questions ICAI’s Focus on Global Opportunities

A user at platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) has recently emphasised a major problem related to Chartered Accountants (CAs) in India, specifically about the gap between the number of CAs being produced and the actual job opportunities available in the country.

The user begins by saying that the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) often talks about global opportunities for CAs (Chartered Accountants) in India. However, several individuals are flagging this point as an impractical idea, as every country already has its own accounting and auditing body, like the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) in the USA or the CA in the UK, Canada, and Australia. Meaning, individuals are trying to make ICAI understand that foreign countries already have their own CAs and have no requirement for Indian CAs.

Therefore, the user suggests that India should first focus on creating more opportunities in finance-related fields within the country (for CAs) before producing more and more holders for them, hoping they will find work in foreign countries. The user believes that the real issue is the situation with the Indian job market, where the number of new CAs keeps increasing, but the number of available jobs or practical opportunities does not match. The supply is not equal to the demand.

He further recommends that ICAI conduct a genuine, ground-level survey to find out the real situation of Indian CAs, like how many are unemployed, underpaid, or struggling to find work, to understand what’s happening in reality.

The statement then criticises the fact that many qualified CAs are waiting or “queuing up” for opportunities, which means there are more CAs than available jobs. At the end of his post, he underlines a deep comparison with engineers in India. Engineers in India are facing the same situation right now that the user is explaining in his post, i.e., in India, there are too many graduates, but not enough good jobs. The comment suggests that CAs are now facing the same oversupply problem as engineers, which leads to unemployment or underemployment among professionals who have worked very hard to qualify.
