The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department and Revenue authorities in Tiruppur district have launched a probe into complaints made by economically deprived women residents of Saaya Pattarai Street in Tiruppur city that their PAN card, Aadhaar Card, and bank accounts had been used fraudulently by “shameless elements” for GST evasion.

The problem was apparently discovered after their applications for Rs. 1,000 monthly aid under the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thogai (KMUT) scheme were rejected, claiming their ineligibility as GST taxpayers.

The women had filed complaints with Tiruppur North police and the GST Department, alleging that a Palladam-based organisation had gotten the documents in order to be included in the KMUT scheme.

Joint Director of GST Department Murugakumar Tiruppur revealed, “We are in the process of analysing the documents”.

According to a top revenue officer, the authenticity of the complaints is being investigated.

The officials told the angry women that, only those who qualified for KMUT benefits based on economic criteria would eventually be included.
