ITR Due Date Approaches: Will CBDT Extend ITR Deadline?
The Income Tax Return (ITR) due date is September 15, 2025, for the non-audit cases. According to the data available on the income tax portal, over 4 crore ITRs have been filed as of September 7, 2025. Out of these, over 3 crore verified ITRs have been processed by the Income Tax Department. Taxpayers only have a week to file their return. Many taxpayers are still wondering whether the due date of the income tax return filing will be extended.
In the past few days, many professionals and companies have sent formal requests to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Finance Minister, Smt Nirmala Sitharam, regarding the extension of the ITR and Tax Audit Report Due Date. All these professionals are outlining the same issue. The Bombay Chartered Accountants Society (BCAS) sent a letter requesting to extend the deadline for ITR filing, tax audit cases and transfer pricing filing. Additionally, the Tax Bar Association, Bhilwara, also requested the same. Similarly, the CA Cell of BJP, Pimpri Chinchwad, also submitted a formal request to the Finance Minister to extend the due dates for filing the ITR and Tax Audit Report for the Assessment Year 2025-26.
All these bodies and professionals are citing the following difficulties faced by the taxpayer:
- ITR Forms and Utilities were not released on time.
- Frequent technical errors on the income tax portal
- Heavy rainfall and flood situation in some states of India
- Delay in AIS, TIS and Form 26AS updates
- Discrepancies in dividends and capital gain data
- The new format requires more information.
