LPG Cylinder Crisis: Restaurants Including LPG Surcharge on Bills Amid Gas Supply Concern
Several restaurants across India have started to include a temporary fee called "LPG surcharge" on customer bills due to the current LPG cylinder shortage crisis.
India is currently facing a major tightening in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply due to the ongoing global tension and supply disruptions. The prices of 19 kg commercial cylinders have reportedly reached around Rs 2,100 to Rs 2,300, which was earlier Rs 1,650.
This has affected several restaurants across the country, especially in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, since the majority of restaurants depend on commercial LPG for their daily work.
Recently, the bills circulating online show that the restaurants are adding separate sections such as "LPG revision" or "gas supply issue." One of the restaurants in Chennai reportedly added Rs 15 as an "LPG Revision" charge. Another restaurant in Bengaluru included Rs 30 as a "gas supply issue" charge.
Meanwhile, other restaurants have hiked the food prices between Rs 5 and Rs 10 on their menu.
The National Restaurant Association of India had issued an advisory urging its member restaurants to save gas usage, rationalize menu and look for other options to manage the shortage.
Currently, the household consumers and other important sectors like hospitals and educational institutions are being prioritized for the LPG supply.
