Meet Garima Sawhney: Gurgaon Based doctor who turned her clinic to Rs 11,400 crore Unicorn
Meet Garima Sawhney: Health is one of the most critical aspects of our life. Being healthy is the primary requirement for living a happy life. In this process, we turn to doctors whenever we feel unhealthy. Doctors are next to God in our society. This is also the inspiring story of a female Doctor who is revolutionizing the healthcare industry of India. We are talking about Dr. Garima Sawhney, a Gurgaon-based gynecologist who founded a health-based start-up that has grown to the current valuation of 1.4 Billion Dollars (11400 crores).
Dr. Garima Sawhney, Pristyn Care’s co-founder, has had an adventurous life. She is a medical practitioner considered one of the best in her specialty (gynecology). She is a soft-spoken leader who began her career as a doctor. She learned the finer points of life through her medical career, which she used to advance her firm and her corporate profession. Her ward duties at a government hospital taught her to be judicious with time. She also learned to make life-changing decisions while working at the Government hospital. In this way, she developed the belief that patient time should always take precedence over personal time.
Garima has always been a very diligent and bright person. She has had an eventful journey full of accomplishments. Some details regarding her life are listed below:
Garima always wanted to have her own patient base, but she soon realized that it is not easy to start her own practice. So she started practicing at a corporate hospital. While working at the Corporate hospital, she did not use to get many opportunities to interact with the patients. Fearing she might lose her skills, she joined another hospital where she used to get her own patients. She started working at many hospitals to earn the trust of patients. By treating complex cases, she soon gained popularity and trust among her patient. Finally, in 2018 she opened her small (8*8) clinic-cum-office in Gurgaon named Pristyn Care.
While working in the medical industry, Garima realized several gaps in the healthcare sector and understood the pain points of patients, especially regarding surgical procedures. She realized the ambiguity present in the surgical procedure which causes fear among the patients and their relatives. During her practice period, she observed that the surgical ecosystem in big hospitals is not transparent and the information chain between patients and doctors is broken. To solve this problem, Garima along with her husband Vaibhav Kapoor and childhood friend Harsimarbir Singh founded Pristyn Care in 2018.
In the early days, they faced numerous challenges. Hospitals and Doctors were skeptical of their start-up idea. The business approach of Pristyn Care is to make use of unused hospital space. They use the hospital’s idle space to treat patients with their own medical infrastructure, doctors, and personnel. The start-up spread its foothold in tier 2 cities by providing advanced surgical procedures which were not available earlier in that city. The start-up’s focus on offering surgery care to patients through advanced medical technology and recovery measures became quite popular among patients. The start-up benefitted greatly during the covid pandemic. Pristyn Care has made medical procedures more affordable by aggregating available hospital space rather than building its own. The strategy of offering end-to-end service and post-operative care made it successful among its competitors.
The company has gained significant traction in the Indian healthcare industry since its inception in 2018, and its founder’s vision and commitment have been instrumental in its success. This health tech startup is currently present in 42 cities and has served over 1.5 million patients to date. It has partnered with over 800 hospitals, over 200 clinics across the country, and a team of over 700 doctors. It currently employs approx 1600 staff. In June 2022, the startup also purchased Lybrate, a healthcare startup financed by Ratan Tata, to provide primary healthcare services to its patients. Some important business details of the start-up are listed below:
