The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) created the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an umbrella organization for retail payments in India. NPCI is permitted to provide payment and settlement systems in India under the terms of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007. NPCI has established two fully-owned subsidiaries, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and NPCI Bharat Bill Pay Limited (NBBL), with the goals of expanding the use of its payment systems internationally and developing an infrastructure for unified bill payments in India, respectively.
