NEET UG 2023 Amendments: On 15 April 2023, The National Testing Agency, NTA has released a notification for the OCI Candidates of NEET (UG) 2023, in which the agency has amended or revised the eligibility criteria of OCI Cardholders for NEET (UG) 2023. As per the official notification released, Now Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons with Indian Origin (PIO), and Foreign Nationals are eligible for admission in Medical/Dental/Ayurveda/Siddha/Unani/Homeopathy Colleges subject to rules and regulations framed by the respective State Governments, Institutions and the Government of India as the case may be.

In accordance with the Honourable Supreme Court Order dated 03.02.2023, OCI shall be entitled to the rights and privileges that had been granted to them prior to the notification of 04/03/2021.

Prior to this change, only NRI or supernumerary seats were available for OCI cardholders to take admission through NEET UG. This amendment was done after the judgment of the Supreme Court in a related case. As said in the official notification – In pursuance of the Judgment dated 03.02.2023 of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in W.P(C) 891/2021 and connected matters and in supersession of earlier corrigendum dated 31.03.2023 on the subject, aspiring OCI Candidates of NEET (UG) 2023 are hereby informed that the amended provision of Clause 5.2.2 of the Information Bulletin of NEET (UG) 2023 dealing with the Eligibility of OCI Cardholders for NEET (UG) shall be read as follows.

NEET UG 2023: Existing Provision for OCI candidates

According to NTA, the current policy for OCI applicants mentioned in the NEET UG 2023 information bulletin stated that the holder of an OCI card, including a PIO card holder, is a foreign national having a passport from a foreign country and is not an Indian citizen. In the same manner, it was added that holders of PIO cards and foreign nationals would not be permitted to take admission to any seats reserved solely for Indian people. Therefore, OCI and PIO will be classified as foreigners and will only be eligible for NRI seats, including paid seats at deemed universities, according to the existing provisions.
