NTA released a clarification on Thursday, saying that out of the 67 top scorers, 44 were the result of a physics question adjustment, and 6 were the result of time loss compensation.

NEET UG Exam 2024: Out of 67 Candidates who Got Rank 1, 44 are Due to Revision in Marks
NEET UG Exam 2024: The National Testing Agency (NTA) administered the NEET (UG) – 2024 to over 24 lakh candidates on 5th May 2024, from 2:00 to 05:20 PM (IST) at 4750 Centers in 571 cities (including 14 cities abroad).
Students and others have raised several concerns about irregularities in the NEET 2024 merit list, toppers, and scoring system ever since the results were announced on 4th June 2024. Compared to two or three candidates in the previous few years, up to 67 people have received full marks on the exam. Furthermore, according to the marking scheme, two candidates’ scores on NEET 2024—718 and 719 out of 720—are not possible.
The NTA clarified these issues and the concerns expressed by applicants about the NEET 2024 outcome in a press statement on 6th June 2024.
The cutoff scores are determined annually based on all of the candidates’ performances. The higher cutoff indicates that this year’s candidates met higher performance requirements. It’s a harder test. The cut-offs and average scores of qualified candidates (out of 720) are displayed below with their corresponding annual variations.
NEET exam 2024 results showed that 44 candidates scored highest on a physics question, according to an NTA release. Two options in the NCERT physics book were found to be wrong in both the old and new editions after subject matter experts analyzed 13,373 challenges to the tentative answer key for that question. 44 students obtained full marks once the solution key was updated.
According to the release, 44 of the 67 applicants who scored 720/720 scores were affected by a change in one Physics Answer Key, and 06 candidates needed to receive extra credit to make up for lost time.
According to a previous statement from NTA, the organization decided to give grace marks to NEET 2024 candidates in order to make up for time lost during the exam administration at certain exam centres. These Writ Petitions were filed by the candidates and raised concerns about exam time loss before the High Courts of Punjab and Haryana, Delhi, and Chhattisgarh.
A Grievance Redressal Committee looked into the petitions by reviewing factual reports and CCTV footage. These candidates received scores depending on how well they answered and how much time they lost once the loss of exam time was verified, in accordance with the system/formula set by the Indian Supreme Court.
According to the NTA, “Candidates received time-loss compensation, and their revised scores range from -20 to 720 points.” Due to compensatory marks, two applicants’ scores among them also happen to be 718 and 719, respectively. The integrity of the examination at these centres was found not to have been compromised after the CCTV footage was analyzed.
With a combined score of 720 out of 720, 67 candidates have achieved an All India Rank (AIR) of 1. Stakeholders have questioned this fact as well. A few others have suggested that the cause could be related to many top scorers showing up from the same NEET exam centre and the purported paper leak. NTA has refuted these claims, nevertheless, and offered explanations.
The NTA reports that the percentage of people who took the NEET 2024 exam increased by almost 15%. In 2023, 20,38,596 candidates made an appearance; in 2024, that number rose to 23,33,297. Because there was a greater pool of candidates, the number of candidates inevitably increased, according to NTA.
The steps taken in UFM cases, such as the termination of candidature and disqualification from further NTA exams, are compliant with the regulations as they stand at this time.
Imitators have been the target of complaints filed by the NTA and the State Police. NTA offers agencies support in investigating crimes pertaining to NEET (UG) 2024.
The NTA has categorically denied any claims of paper leaks, even though the results of the aforementioned investigations are anticipated. The NTA issued an extensive press release on 6th May 2024, reaffirming the reports on social media that there had been no paper leak. The NTA asserts that there was no compromise to the integrity of the exam.
