NIRF 2024: Rankings 2024 To be Announced Today at 3 PM by Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education has declared to announce the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 today (August 12, 2024) at 3 PM on the official website, nirfindia.org. In NIRF, higher institutions are ranked as per various specifications. This ranking is done every year. As per the official notification the NIRF All India Ranking 2024 will be declared through a press conference led by Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Education Minister of the Ministry of Higher Education at 3 PM.

UGC has already confirmed the official date and time for the NIRF 2024 declaration on Twitter saying, “The rankings for higher education institutions under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), 2024 will be announced on 12th August 2024. Watch the updates on http://nirfindia.org.”


The Ministry of Education has too released an official notification in this context that reads, “This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations and broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception.”

In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), institutions are ranked in the following categories:

  • Overall
  • Engineering
  • Pharmacy
  • Colleges
  • Medical
  • Law
  • Agriculture
  • Architecture
  • Dentistry.

This year, more colleges than last year applied to be featured in the rankings. 8686 institutes participated in NIRF 2023.

In the “Overall” category last year, IIT Madras came in first, followed by IISc Bengaluru and IIT Delhi. In the “Medical” category, AIIMS Delhi took first place.​

For the previous five years running, IIT Madras has consistently placed #1. Additionally, it has been regarded as the “second-best research institute in the country” and has held the top spot in the “Engineering” category for the previous eight years.

If we refer to the year 2023, institutions in the categories of “Innovation” and “Agriculture and Allied Sectors” were placed higher on the ranking list, while institutions in the category of “Research Institutions” were added to the list from the previous year.

IIT Delhi was placed third in the “Universities” category the previous year. Jawaharlal Nehru University rose to the second rank and IIIT Bangalore to the top spot on the same list.

Miranda House came in first place in the “Colleges” category, followed by Hindu College in second place and Presidency College, Chennai, in third place.

IIT Madras was ranked first, IIT Delhi was ranked second, and IIT Bombay was placed third in the “Engineering” category.
