Calls Grow For ITR Deadline Extension Amid Tech Glitches And Adverse Conditions

Only 12 Days Left! Will CBDT Extend Deadline for Filing ITR Beyond Sept 15 Amid Portal Glitch and Other Reasons?
Numerous taxpayers, financial institutions, tax associations, chartered accountants (CAs) and tax experts are urging the Finance Ministry and CBDT to extend the deadline for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) for financial year 2024-25, beyond September 15, 2025, due to several reasons, like the late availability of Excel utilities for ITR forms 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7; data mismatches between AIS and Form 26AS; glitches noticed in the income tax portal; the festival season; floods & heavy rainfall in several states; and many more.
The Income Tax Department earlier extended the deadline for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) till September 15, 2025, from July 31, 2025, for individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and other taxpayers not required for their accounts to get audited. This deadline was extended by 45 days. However, the tax department has not announced any recent revisions to the ITR due date extension for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26).
One of the chartered accountants named Ritu Gupta, requested the government to extend the ITR filing due date till October 31, 2025, due to the late availability of Excel utilities, heavy rainfall in several parts of India, and clashing due dates with audit dates. She wrote in a post on social media, "We are chartered accountants and not AI who can work in adverse conditions."
Another CA named Anupam Sharma on Platform "X" urged the Ministry of Finance and CBDT, New Delhi, to extend the deadline for ITR filing, as several Indian states are facing the devastating effects of heavy rains and floods, which have made it difficult to perform a simpler task like ITR filing. He said, "To the Ministry of Finance and CBDT, New Delhi. With so many states facing the devastating effects of heavy rains and floods, a simple task like filing taxes has become nearly impossible for many. The lack of proper connectivity and the late ITR forms are only adding to the stress. Please consider the struggles of millions of citizens and grant an extension for ITR filing to September 30, 2025, and for Tax Audit to November 30, 2025. It's not just a deadline; it's about providing support when people need it most."
Previously, the Chandigarh Chartered Taxation Association (CCATAX) had also requested that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extend the due date of filing ITR and the tax audit report for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment year 2025-26) amid severe technical and weather disruptions in a communication dated August 21, 2025. In communication, CCATAX referred to the recent glitches noticed in the income tax portal, server crashes, discrepancies in details of AIS and Form 26AS, session timeouts, and recent amendments introduced to the financial statement format for non-corporate entities by ICAI, for which training and software updates are required. Therefore, it has slowed down the process. Other than these, several other requests have been submitted to the tax department regarding the extension of the ITR filing due date, considering all it is highly anticipated that the deadline for filing ITR will be extended beyond September 15, 2025.To the Ministry of Finance and CBDT,New Delhi .
